The First Alert FAS14080 5-inch B/W Monitoring System with 2 Cameras is
a complete and incredibly simple solution for remotely monitoring a
small area. Constructed as a wireless system, the monitor can receive a
signal from up to 300 feet away (with a clear line of site), allowing
the easy-to-install cameras to be placed almost anywhere. The cameras
include six IR (infrared) LEDs (light emitting diodes) for nighttime
surveillance, allowing this system to provide you with a black-and-white
image with a good resolution in a very compact package. The First Alert
FAS14080 monitor includes RCA A/V (audio/video) outputs for recording,
making it the perfect solution for when you want to avoid a
professional-level installation and require a complete video
surveillance unit for monitoring rooms, entrances, or other areas in
your home or business. The First Alert FAS14080 black-and-white monitor allows you to view an
image with a resolution of up to 350 TVL (TV Lines) at center on its
five-inch picture-tube screen. Utilizing 0.33-inch black-and-white CMOS
(complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) image sensors, the First Alert
FAS14080's two cameras each include a 3.6mm fixed lens and deliver a
decent resolution of 380 horizontal TVL. These cameras can receive a
usable picture even in no-light (0 Lux) conditions up to 10-feet away
with their IR emitters. The First Alert FAS14080 monitor runs on
12-volts DC power and has an operating temperature of eight- to
144-degrees Fahrenheit, while the camera consumes 1.3 watts of power and
can also operate in temperatures ranging from eight- to 144-degrees

Lux rating is the
measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and
stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle
from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three Lux would mean a camera
could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object
that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter
away. The lower the Lux level, the better the camera's ability to work
in low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater than

The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important measure of a
camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions or poor wiring
causes "noise" which consumes processing power and disk space. A camera
with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially for recording areas in
which both indoor and outdoor light are present. CCD (charge-coupled
device) sensors provide high-quality images that are less susceptible to
noise. CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less
