Sony's HT-5800DP home theater system brings home the convenience of a
specially matched, all-in-one system with the quality of separate
components. You get a stand-alone 5-disc DVD/CD changer with play
exchange (swap 4 discs while 1 is playing), a 5.1-channel audio/video
surround receiver with separate A and B speaker outputs for multiroom
use, and a 5.1-channel speaker system. With its impressive
120-watts-per-channel x 6 channels (4 satellites, 1 center speaker, and
an equal-wattage powered subwoofer), the system is ready for action
right out of the box. The DVD player spins DVD movies as well as recordable CDs packed with
your favorite MP3 music, filling your room with glorious surround sound.
The system processes everything from DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 discrete
surround signals to Dolby Pro Logic II, which generates multichannel
surround from any stereo source--movie or music. The system's onboard
32-bit surround processor also features Sony's own digital signal
processing, broadening your surround listening possibilities. All
requisite cabling for basic use are included, making it easy to assemble.
Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely
thinking of "someday," the HT-5800DP's DVD player--the Sony
DVP-NC675P/S--stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs.
Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal
lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the
scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution
and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The
receiver does not offer component-video inputs or switching, so you'll
need to connect the DVD player's component-video outputs directly to
your compatible television to appreciate this feature.
Three composite-video inputs offer accompanying analog-audio inputs,
accommodating most audio/video components and granting convenient AV
switching. If you have an older TV you may require a video modulator to
convert the receiver's composite-video (yellow RCA jack) signal to an RF
signal (which uses a thicker, threaded jack).
The included speakers cover front left/right/center and rear
left/right/center, along with a powerful, 10-inch, 120-watt subwoofer
with a bass port for added low-frequency slam. The sub may be placed
anywhere that's convenient for you; its low-frequency sounds are
difficult for the ear to localize and thus appear to emanate from the
appropriate smaller speakers. All satellites use a single 3.25-inch
driver, while the center speaker uses a pair of 4-inch drivers to better
handle the bulk of the audio from your DVDs (including critical
dialogue). All speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent distortion
when placed on or near your TV.
A host of radio presets (20 FM, 10 AM) put all your favorite stations
(and then some) right at your fingertips, and the receiver's amplifier
uses discrete output transistors for clean, quality power.
